Hong Kong Economic Policy Challenge: Housing
28 Sep 2020

The Hong Kong Economic Policy Challenge (HKEPC) is a student-initiated Economic policy competition, co-organized by the Department of Economics. It is a unique opportunity for students to apply classroom learning to real-world economic policy issues. In partnership with the HKUST Economics Department, Ernst & Young, and Bloomberg, teams from around Hong Kong will get the chance to present their practical, yet novel approaches to resolving Hong Kong’s housing crisis and keeping the unaffordability levels constant at 20.9 or lower for a 10-year period.

Contestants must register individually or as a team by December 27, 2020. Proposals, in the form of a 12-slide presentation containing the main issue identified, empirical analysis, economic modeling, a policy recommendation, and welfare evaluation must be submitted by January 3, 2021, for review. The six teams with the most creative, effective, and feasible recommendations will be invited to present in front of a panel of judges who are experts on the Hong Kong housing market. The winner, runner-up, and second runner-up will receive $30,000, $20,000, and $10,000, respectively, as well as other potential opportunities to disseminate their policy recommendations.
