In an online expert panel on “Will Global Value Chains Survive COVID-19?” held on September 25, 2020, Professor Edwin LAI of the Department of Economics explained to a business and policy audience of 120 persons how the development of global value chains supported opportunities for industrialization in developing countries. He cautioned that the recent rise of trade protectionism thus threatens the future economic prospects of developing countries. The event was organized by HKUST’s Institute for Emerging Market Studies and Institute for Public Policy with EY Hong Kong as part of their Emerging Market Insights Series. Other panelists included Hoe Ee KHOR, Chief Economist of ASEAN+3 Macroeconomic Research Office (AMRO), and Nelson CHOW, Partner of Supply Chain & Operations Consulting at EY.
