Prof. Albert Park has been appointed as the Head of the Department of Economics effective from 15 January 2020.

Prof. Albert Park joined HKUST in 2011. He is Chair Professor in the Department of Economics and Division of Social Science, and Professor in the Division of Public Policy. He was the Founding Director of the HKUST Institute of Emerging Market Studies (IEMS) from 2013 to 2020, and a Senior Fellow of the Jockey Club Institute for Advanced Study at HKUST from 2011 to 2020. He supports the Business School’s collaboration with the Moscow School of Management SKOLKOVO by serving on the School’s International Advisory Council.

Graduating with a PhD in Applied Economics from Stanford University in 1996, Professor Park joined the University of Michigan as Assistant Professor in the next year and was promoted to Associate Professor in 2002. He joined the University of Oxford in 2007 as a Reader and was promoted to Professor in 2010.

Professor Park’s primary research fields are development and labor economics. He is an expert on the Chinese economy and has led numerous large-scale survey research projects in China. He previously served as Co-Editor-in-Chief of China Economic Review and serves on the Editorial Boards of several academic journals. He is a Research Fellow of the Centre for Economic Policy Research (London), the Institute for the Study of Labor (IZA, Bonn), the International Growth Centre (Oxford/LSE/DFID), and the Human Capital and Economic Opportunity Working Group (Chicago). Professor Park serves on the Leadership Council of the Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN) Hong Kong and co-chairs the Academic Committee of the China Economy Summer Institute. He has consulted frequently for the World Bank, and his research and commentary has appeared in the Economist, New York Times, Washington Post, Wall Street Journal, China Daily, BBC, CNN, NBC, Bloomberg, Freakonomics, and NPR.
