Program quota: 63 (2025-26)
Target Students
- The BSc in Economics and Finance program is quantitatively oriented and suitable for students with a strong analytical mind, with science/mathematics backgrounds, and economics students with a good mathematics background.
- Prior knowledge in economics is not essential. Many students have their first encounter with economics when they join HKUST.
- Students who wish to pursue further study or pursue careers that require greater skills in economics and finance, and additional quantitative methods, e.g., banks, financial institutions, trade, and government agencies.
The Curriculum
In the first two semesters, students will take foundation courses in business and management, including accounting, economics, finance, information systems, and business ethics. They will also take mathematics, language courses, and university common core courses.
Students will take major required courses from the second year of study onwards.
Minor Programs
Students in the program can make use of the free elective credits to take minor programs. Popular programs for BSc students are mathematics, entrepreneurship, information technology, and big data technology.

Visit Major Selection Exercise for information on general rules, eligibility, program requirements, ranking criteria, and more. Students who are shortlisted for an interview will also be invited to take a Math test on the same day as the interview.

Math Test (Arranged by the Economics Department)
- 1 hour, 4-6 questions in total
- Testing if you understand the shape of some functions frequently used in Economics. For example, we ask if a function is increasing, decreasing, convex, concave, and where it attains maximum, minimum, some limit points, etc.
